DESCRIPTION:Meet at 432 Stallion Road\, Corner Equestrian Road\, Ruimsig\, Roodepoort \nQuick! Quick! Before the weather gets too cold for spiders and the winter fires burn the grasslands\, come and see what we can find in the Ruimsig Entomological (butterfly) Reserve. We’ve noticed that with the late and copious rains and still warm weather\, a lot of spiders are still around. \nThe reserve is pristine veld grassland which has been more or less undisturbed for decades\, so there are no paths. Please ensure you have water and if necessary snacks and please wear strong shoes and be prepared for grass seeds getting into your socks! \nWe now charge R50 per adult and R10 per child under 12 to attend these events. Eye glasses (magnifiers) will be on sale too at R50 each. Please bring cash. This is the only way we can raise money to run your club. \nWe will supply sweepnets\, other collecting equipment and reference books. SUMMARY:Snap Survey at Albert's Farm Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:We have been invited to hold a snap survey of arachnids at Albert’s Farm by the Friends of Albert’s Farm Conservancy. All Spider Club members and interested members of the Friends of Albert’s Farm are invited to take part. \nMeet on Sunday 10th March at 8 a.m. at Main car park of Alberts Farm. The main entrance is on 6th Road West\, corner/opposite 8th Street\, Greymont. Co-ordinates: -26.1586; 27.9703 \nThere is no entrance fee to the park but The Spider Club now charges for attendance at field and certain other events to raise money: R50 per adult and R10 per child 11 years and under\, cash only\,\nwith the option of paying R120 PER FAMILY for annual subscription. For field events we supply vials\, magnifiers\, plastic pill bottles\, sweep nets and some other basic collecting equipment but please bring your own if you have as well as any reference books\, adequate water\, a hat and good walking shoes. \nPit traps will be installed beforehand and other collecting methods will be used on the day to get as rounded a picture of the arachnid fauna as possible. In the afternoon\, those who would like to help with preliminary identification using microscopes can rendezvous at 8 O’Brien Avenue\, Waterval Estate. It’s just a stone’s throw from the eastern side of Alberts Farm. Photos taken on the day might be used to create a poster.

There is riverine bush\, Highveld grassland\, dolomite formations and caves\, walkways\, steep bits\, suspensions bridges and cool woodland areas.  With such variety of habitats we could find ANYTHING if we are allowed to walk slowly enough. \nDirections from Johannesburg:  Take William Nicol in Fourways going north\, it becomes the R511. From where you cross over the N14 Highway it is 16.6 kms and should take you about 15 minutes.  Meet in the parking area. \nIn addition to the Spider Club fee of R50 per adult and R10.00 per child\, there is a CASH entrance fee:  R70 for adults\, R40 for grade 1-12 and pre-school children are free.  All fees are payable in cash there are no card facilities.   Please remember\, they only take CASH so make sure you bring with you. DESCRIPTION:This small reserve is home to an impressive variety of plant and animal species and was proclaimed to preserve the habitat for the rare and threatened Heidelberg Copper Butterfly\, Chrisoritis aureus. It is about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg\, just past Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. \nDirections: take the N3 going south. Leave the highway at Exit 59 onto the R23\, Heidelberg/Balfour Road turning right over the highway\, at about 1.3 km turn left onto the Lagerspoort Road. The entrance gate is at – 26.566719\, 28.380233 or 26°34’00.2″S 28°22’48.8″E. \nPlease note from now on we charge for attendance at field and certain other events: R50 per adult and R10 per child 11 years and under with the option of paying R120 PER FAMILY for annual subscription. ** Some venues will also require an entrance fee which must be paid by each individual. SUMMARY:Klipdift Dam near Potchefstroom
DESCRIPTION:November Weekend or one day : Friday evening 24th  to Sunday midday 26th  at Lakeview Holiday Resort at  Klipdrif Dam.  It is J-U-S-T still in Gauteng Province.  Come for the weekend or just for the day.  It is about an hour and a half from Johannesburg on the N12 National Road. Directions: from Johannesburg: take the N12 towards Potchefstroom and about 40 kms past the Fochville turnoff  turn left at the sign for Klipdrif Dam.  The resort telephone number is 072 954-1088.   Please contact Joanie Beytell ** on cell 082 490 2832 or e-mail joaniebeytell@gmail.com to find out more about the venue.  We have booked a self-catering chalet (with electricity) which can accommodate 7 people at the Lakeview Holiday Resort in the reserve. Payment to be made to the Reserve on arrival at R200 pppn\, or if you prefer to camp it is R60p/stand without electricity\, R120p/stand with electricity. R30 p/person day visitor or R60 p/person overnight.  This looks like an absolutely wonderful and arachnologically unexplored area with wide open grassland\, clumps of trees and of course the dam.  So come along. Join us for a great weekend away or just come for the day. DESCRIPTION:Help to create an arachnid list for Capricorn Business Park\, which is in the Muizenberg East Conservation Cluster. The species lists for this area are fairly sparse\, with nothing for arachnids. The area is being built according to very strict environmental guidelines and is managed as close to a natural environment as possible. The centre of the park is a dam\, surrounded by indigenous plants and this is the area where we will collect. There are plenty of birds to check too. To get there travel on the M5 towards Muizenberg\, turn into Capricorn Boulevard\, drive into the business park\, take the second exit at the first circle\, the first exit at the second circle and turn left into Lakeside place. Coordinates are -34.093194\, 18.488223. The area is safe\, there is parking. Bring a packed lunch as there are no facilities for braaing or shops. DESCRIPTION:Bring a picnic lunch. Meet at the first green bench under a sweet-thorn about 50 M from the entrance gate on your left and we will decide where to go from there. The natural areas are thick thorn-veld savanna\, the grounds themselves are mowed and there are dams and bits of grassland\, so we should find a good variety of spiders and other arachnids. Old and even new buildings will no doubt yield many interesting arachnids as well. We will try to list and identify as much as we can during the afternoon and specimens will probably be deposited immediately in the National Collection of arachnida.
