SUMMARY:CANCELLED Mpumalanga Night and Day Spider Walks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two spider walks at Sterkspruit Nature Reserve – a night walk on 26 March\, and a day walk on 27 March. \nWe will be starting the weekend off with a night walk on Saturday 26 March. For this walk if you care to join you will need to bring a torch and decent walking shoes as we won’t be able to see what we are stepping on too well. We will be looking for spiders and scorpions which are mostly active at night so we have high hopes for some absolutely epic finds. \nAfter the night walk you can choose to stay over on the reserve for the spider walk the next morning. However\, the accommodation is very rustic and limited space is available. For details on the accommodation please be sure to message Jarrod 067 833 2191 personally\, else your spot will not be booked.  \nThen\, for the day walk on Sunday 27 March we will start the morning off at around 8:30. \nThis is a beautiful natural reserve with plenty scenic areas to search for all types of spiders and other critters. \nWe ask a donation for the event being hosted that goes toward setting up these events and hopefully some exciting items in the future. Recommended amounts are R50/adults and R10 for kids under 12. \nThe Sterkspruit Nature Reserve is situated just outside of Lydenburg in Mpumalanga. The reserve’s escarpment incorporates highveld grassland\, forested kloofs\, wooded stream banks\, and quartzite cliffs. The natural habitat is perfect for fly fishing\, bird watching\, and hiking. \nThe reserve is home to a variety of mammals\, including porcupine\, aardwolf and the Cape clawless otter. There are more than 150 bird species\, including the ground woodpecker\, bush blackcap and blackwinged plover. DESCRIPTION:Bring a picnic and your bathing costume\, as well as the normal sunhat\, something to drink and good walking shoes. The Spider Club attendance fee is R50 per adult and R10 per child 11 years and under\, cash only\, with the option of paying R150 PER FAMILY for annual subscription. \nLate summer is the most amazing time of year to find spiders and we have 21 hectares to roam in with a choice of grassland\, thickets\, river frontage and a spring-fed dam. Shannon Rogotzki will be our hostess and says that after a day in the hot sun we are welcome to leap into their swimming pool to cool off. \nWe will supply vials\, magnifiers\, plastic pill bottles\, sweep nets and some other basic collecting equipment but please bring your own if you have as well as any reference books.  We will bring a microscope and a draft copy of the new SANSA (South African National Survey of Arachnida) photo guides so you can practise identifying spiders. \nIf you plan to attend please let Caren know (call 083 753 2946). She will set up a WhatsApp group and send you the gate entry code on the day.  \nHow to get there: Take the Pelindaba Road (R512) driving north and turn right onto the Winsome Valley Road at 25°52’31.6″S 27°54’21.8″E\, -25.87444\, 27.906056. After about 800 metres\, turn right at the four-way-stop into Westway Road. Continue to the end of Westaway: at the T-Junction with Alexander Avenue you will see the entrance to Norscot Koppies on the opposite side of the road.
