SUMMARY:Extraordinary General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING OF THE SPIDER CLUB OF SOUTHERN AFRICA. \nTO BE HELD AT THE IMBIZO CENTRE\, WALTER SISULU NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN\, MALCOLM ROAD\, POORTVIEW ON 7TH NOVEMBER 2015 AT 9:30 A.M. \nAfter 40 years of existence has The Spider Club come to the end of its useful life or simply a parting of the ways? Do we stay as we are for the rest of our lives or do we change to virtual? \nThe current Committee is finding it increasingly difficult to fulfil their duties due to other commitments. Despite the efforts of a few\, the membership of the club proper is steadily falling whilst membership of our Facebook page is expanding exponentially. A decision must be made about the road forward\, however it is NOT the committee’s place to make the decision unilaterally hence this Extraordinary General Meeting. The questions below will act as an Agenda\, so please read them carefully\, think about them and if you are a paid up or honorary member please vote on the outcome. We will of course only implement changes after the end of our year\, in other words after the end of June 2016 but we need to plan now. Do we stick with the present format or do we let the club as it is\, die a natural death? Can the club just use Facebook and the Website as methods of discussion and communication? A decision MUST be taken. \nDECISION: A notice will go out prior to the meeting so that distant members will be able to vote but the eventual decision will be taken at the meeting\, providing we have a quorum. \nHere are the questions we would like answers for: \nCOMMUNICATING WITH THE MEMBERS ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS \n\nWhat method would you prefer?\nE-mail SMS Facebook Other (specify)\n\nTHE QUARTERLY SPIDER CLUB NEWS: \n\nDo you receive our newsletter?\nDo you read it?\nDo you file it?\nDo you print it?\nDo you flag it for later and if so do you get back to it?\n\nPlease let us know if you are satisfied with the content and if not what would you like to see. Are you willing to submit articles\, photographs and stories for our newsletter? \nEVENTS: \n\nWhat do you like best in no particular order or would you rather do these things on your own?\nField trips: Weekends\nIdentification courses run by professionals\nIdentification courses run by senior members of the club\nIdentifying preserved specimens\nPhotographing spiders and other small creatures\nHalf days\nWhole days\n\nIf we carry on please be aware that I would like to stand down from the Committee and I think we ought to have a reshuffle of committee members anyway. \nIf we close down\, there is the question of what to do with funds. \nArachnologically yours \nAstri Leroy \nFor details please email us at info@spiderclub.co.za and for directions www.sanbi.org/gardens/walter-sisulu. \nALL WILL BE EXPLAINED BUT WE NEED TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE CLUB SO PLEASE\, PLEASE ATTEND IF YOU CAN DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME WE MAY COMPLETELY DO AWAY WITH A COMMITTEE\, SO DON’T BE SCARED YOU WON’T BE ASKED TO WORK FOR THE CLUB.

SUMMARY:Parataxonomist Training
DESCRIPTION:This is going to be different from the previous events when we simply sorted spiders. Robin will introduce us to the intricacies of spider taxonomy with printed worksheets and a presentation. Numbers will be strictly limited to the number of microscopes available. There will be a charge of R100 per person payable on the day. This will entitle every delegate to the use of a microscope\, a printed worksheet\, Robin’s expertise\, tea\, coffee and a light lunch. \nKeep your eyes on your e-mail and our Facebook page as other events may be organized\, sometimes at quite short notice. We will attempt to give you fair warning. And remember that Norman Larsen is at the Cape Union Mart Adventure Centre\, Canal walk in Cape Town every Saturday between 11 a.m. and 12 noon to demonstrate and talk about SPIDERS!

SUMMARY:Yebo Gogga 2015
DESCRIPTION:Setting up is done on 12th May. If you are able to help please contact joan@spiderclub.co.za. \nOn 20 December 2013\, the UN General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). The UN focus is related particularly to light based technologies\, communication and energy\, but because almost all life depends ultimately on light it is appropriate to emphasise the biological importance of light. Some bacteria living in unusual and hostile environments like geothermal vents on the ocean floor utilize chemicals as an energy source. They however represent a tiny fraction of the life that reaches every part of Earth. \nLight is the energy that converts inorganic compounds into the building blocks of life. It allows vision and all that sight makes possible. Most animals rely on vision to seek food and avoid danger. Night and day are the rhythm of our lives and day length the cue for preparing for the changing season for both plants and animals. It is not surprising that the ancients worshipped the sun\, it is the key to life as we know it. \nVisit Yebo 2015 and discover more about light\, living things and sustainable living.
