Dr Nick Keiser from the USA will deliver a presentation\, specifically on community-nest spiders (Stegodyphus spp.). \n\nTitle: Animal Venoms and Their Application in Studies of Evolution and Behavior\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters: Dr Tim Colston\, Dr Sierra Smith\, and Dr Nick Keiser\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Diverse animals from across the tree of life use venoms to capture prey or for defense. The evolution of venoms not only represents a key evolutionary innovation in groups like reptiles\, arthropods\, mollusks\, and cnidarians\, but also provides a source for biomolecules for pharmaceutical discovery. This presentation will be given by three researchers with complimentary expertise and will cover the evolution of venom\, differences in venom use between snakes and spiders\, methods for studying venomics\, and preliminary results of how the evolution of social behavior in spiders influences venom complexity.\n\n\nPlease Note: The event is free and safe parking is available in Minnaar Street

DESCRIPTION:It’s back!\n\n\nJust because winter is here doesn’t mean the spider fun needs to stop. Come down to the Agricultural Research Council in Roodeplaat to have a super close look at some spider specimens under a microscope to learn about the fine detailed features that define a spider and what family it belongs to.\n\nWe will be looking at all the common spiders found in and around your homes to help you identify them\n\nThis is an awesome day for all ages! Young kids might find some of the terms a little complicated\, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t love seeing the spiders up close under the microscopes \n\nWe will have some coffee and tea to start off the morning and then get down to the nitty gritty.\n\nPLUS! A bonus is that we get to look at the National Collection of Arachnida which holds most of all the described and a whole lot of undescribed species of spiders\n\nThe cost is R100 per person\, but R50 for kids under 12.
