Alice Glockner Provincial Nature Reserve

This small reserve is home to an impressive variety of plant and animal species and was proclaimed to preserve the habitat for the rare and threatened Heidelberg Copper Butterfly, Chrisoritis aureus. It is about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, just past Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve.

Directions: take the N3 going south. Leave the highway at Exit 59 onto the R23, Heidelberg/Balfour Road turning right over the highway, at about 1.3 km turn left onto the Lagerspoort Road. The entrance gate is at – 26.566719, 28.380233 or 26°34’00.2″S 28°22’48.8″E.

Please note from now on we charge for attendance at field and certain other events: R50 per adult and R10 per child 11 years and under with the option of paying R120 PER FAMILY for annual subscription. ** Some venues will also require an entrance fee which must be paid by each individual. For field trips we will supply vials, magnifiers, plastic pill bottles and some other basic equipment but please bring your own if you have as well as any reference books, a picnic lunch, adequate water, a hat and good walking shoes.
