John LeroyJohn spent his early youth in the then Belgian Congo but when the Congo erupted he landed in South Africa where his interest in invertebrates continued. His love of all things natural meant that he concentrated on nature photography, mostly of birds and macro photography of invertebrates, eventually specializing in spider photography.  The photographs illustrating John and Astri’s book Spiders of Southern Africa are all his.

He began his photographic career using Minolta cameras, upgrading and acquiring the necessary lenses over time and stayed with the brand until digital photography came of age when he changed Nikon.  John is in demand as a lecturer on digital macro photography with photographic clubs and various nature oriented interest groups.

In 1975 he and Astri and others founded The Spider Club of Southern Africa, he is a member of AfrAS (the African Arachnological Society) and the International, British and American Arachnological Societies.
